I was invited as media to cover this press event. All opinions are my own.
Another Captain America: Civil War interview I had the privilege to sit in on was that of ABC Revenge star Emily VanCamp. Emily discusses the relationship between Sharon Carter and Captain America, the kick butt fight scenes, and her favorite childhood superhero during this exclusive interview!
Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13
Q : You kicked some serious butt. Can you tell us about your training?
Emily, “It’s just a lot of working out really. I had already done some training for Revenge so it was an easier segue into the films. You wanna go into these movies feeling really strong and feeling fit.” Adding, “I was a dancer so all that physical activity’s great and helps with the sequences and stuff because ultimately it’s choreography, I hope to get to do more of it.”
Q : How do you feel knowing you’re going down in history as Agent 13?
Emily, “It’s really cool. I mean being a part of this universe is really a special thing especially with the movies that they’re making and how good they are. I’m really happy to do it with the people I’m doing it with. Everyone’s great and super talented and these movies could have been very sort of surface level, but what I love about Marvel is how they delve into the characters. They sort of give us the freedom as well to create a version of the character that hopefully the fans will like and it’s a really fun process.”
Q : How do you feel knowing that you’re gonna be a role model for females and young girls?
Emily, “I always hate it when I hear actors or musicians or people in the public eye say that they have no obligation to be any sort of role model because I mean it’s not like you have an obligation – but you have a choice. And why wouldn’t you choose to empower young women and use yourself as a vehicle when you have a voice to kind of inspire that. I don’t see why you wouldn’t. I mean that’s not to say I’m always gonna play this kind of character. It’s amazing to play a kickass girl like Sharon Carter or a really tortured version of a woman when I played Emily Thorne” [in Revenge].
Emily also shared that she has three sisters and really wonderful women in her life, and just wants to see girls have the best opportunities they possibly can. Adding, “if I can inspire that in the tiniest way I don’t see why I wouldn’t.”
What was Emily’s favorite characteristic of Sharon Carter? Emily shares, “I think she has a really strong moral compass and I think that’s what her and Steven initially sort of identify with each other. Ultimately in the comic books it led to a very complicated relationship, but there’s gotta be something that sort of brings them together, as well as their love of Peggy.”
Emily also opened up about her favorite childhood superhero, sharing it was the Ninja Turtles! Emily says, “I’m not gonna lie. I was one like four years in a row for Halloween and I was trying to figure out do they count as superheroes? I don’t know, but I mean that was “my thing”. And probably inspired some of these characters I really like to play.”
We all giggled about her story, and I’m sure many of us in the room could relate. I certainly loved the Ninja Turtles growing up – it also helped that I had a younger brother who was obsessed with them too. Wouldn’t it be fun to see a childhood picture of Emily VanCamp as a Ninja Turtle? She should totally post one on a #TBT. 😉
Q : Will the red hat become a trademark feature for your character in future films?
Emily, “No, I don’t think so. That’s not her thing. She can’t steal it.”
Q : Tell us about the kiss.
Emily, “I didn’t even think I was allowed to talk about, but I’m realizing everyone’s seen the film, so I guess I can talk about it. It’s kind of refreshing to see Captain in a more intimate situation and they have chemistry. It was there even in The Winter Soldier, so it’s kind of nice to see it finally happen I would say.”
Q : So this group is divided #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan. In real life are you Team Cap?
Emily, “Well I have to be in Team Cap! The truth is Sharon’s very torn. She’s got this struggle in this movie where she’s like sort of on the sly giving information, but trying to keep her job. So I guess for the viewers it could potentially go either way, but I think for me to say I was anything but Team Cap would be massive problems. You know, I agree with him. Watching the movie I was really trying to [remove] my personal connection to the character and I really get what he’s doing. I truly do.”
Our final question pertained to her role as Emily Thorne on Revenge and her role as Sharon Carter, asking the question who would win in a battle. Emily’s answers, “I was really thinking about it because I think Sharon’s incredibly technical and has this very serious training. It’s not like some sensei that she had in Japan, you know, but I think Emily would win because she’s so tortured. She’s just fueled by so much anger when she unleashes the rage. I think it would be a really close fight. Sharon might just be missing a little bit of an edge.”
I absolutely loved meeting Emily VanCamp. I was a die-hard Revenge fan, so I was a true fangirl in the moment. She was so sweet and kind – nothing like those kick butt characters she plays, but that just shows what an amazing actress she is.
