Matilda The Musical Review
I was invited as media to attend a performance. All opinions are my own.
In a world where most parents believe that their children are precious miracles, Matilda Wormwood’s parents think that she is nothing more than a “lousy little worm.” How wrong are they! Brilliant, brainy, bold and brave, Matilda really is the most special and miraculous kid imaginable. Bullied mercilessly by her father and her dance-obsessed mother, Matilda still stands up for what she believe is right, even if that means breaking the rules and being “naughty.” Neglected by her greedy, scheming, vulgar parents, Matilda is left to fend for herself, spending her days in the library, hungrily reading everything she can. While Matilda yearns to attend school and escape her awful parents, she soon learns that Crunchem Hall Elementary is no better than home. With the help of her schoolmates and Miss Honey’s courageous support, Matilda discovers that she has a remarkable power with which to fight back.
Matilda The Musical Review
The play begins with a birthday scene and fun opening number of the kids singing and dancing. Mrs. Wormwood is too busy dancing with her partner, Rudolpho, to recognize that she’s pregnant. The parents definitely do not want another child, yet Matilda is born.
Headmistress and Principal of Crunchem Hall, Miss Agatha Trunchbull is a child-hating bully who’s no match for strong-willed Matilda. Mr. and Mrs Wormwood are too involved in their own lives to realize what a bright, young child they have on their hands, so Matilda spends her days at the library with the story-loving librarian, Mrs. Phelps.
Matilda shares a tall tale with the librarian that weaves itself into Matilda’s real life.
The set is filled with letters and words like quiet, trouble, sister, love, and many other expressions that define the story. I love the musical performance when the kids show up at school for the first day. The school gates become alive with different letters that brighten with each new added piece, while two performers sing and dance atop of them.
The kids do an outstanding job with multiple musical performances, especially Matilda, who was played by Gabrielle Gutierrez on opening night. Miss Trunchbull, played by Dan Chameroy, also does an incredible job portraying the mean school Principal.
Make sure to arrive back a few minutes before the second half for some comedic relief by Mr. Wormwood. Overall, I thought the show was fantastic and definitely lives up to its multi award-winning hype. There is some strong language (negative/degrading talk towards the children, but no cursing), so I wouldn’t say it’s for the littlest family members. I brought my 9 year old son and he really enjoyed the performance.

I LOVE HOW they are partnering to make children get school supplies. It’s important for kids to get treats (like attending the theater) but also to remember to give.
