My dad is a pilot and growing up I remember going flying with him all over the state of Washington. Some of my fondest memories are camping at air shows and watching stunt pilots do their thing. My favorite stunt was when the pilot would do a hammerhead, or a stall. They would fly vertically as high as they could, then stall the plane and fall down to the ground. The pilot would pull up at the last second, escaping disaster and thrilling the crowd. I caught a TV commercial recently about Air Hogs Helix X4 Stunt Copter, and I knew I had to review it.
When I opened up the box I was so excited to get started. My sons were psyched to see the Helix X4 in action as well. I am not an expert on flying remote control devices, but I was able to get it off the ground and maneuver the Air Hogs Stunt Copter pretty easily. Now I know it is going to take more practice before I can make the remote control helicopter do what I want it to do, but that’s the fun part.
I really like the stunt controls. With a push of a button you can perform 3 amazing stunts as you flip, barrel roll and do a 180 flip. My boys thought the barrel roll was the coolest. I also liked how high it actually flew when we got it outside.
I was a little disappointed with how long the battery lasted, which is about 10 minutes on a full charge, but when I did more research I found that this was pretty standard. I do like that it has multiple charging options. The remote control takes 8 double A batteries, and the copter itself can be plugged into your computer using the USB cable, or you can plug it into the remote, and the batteries will charge the device.
The quad copter is an indoor toy, but can be taken outside if it is not windy. It is pretty light, so any wind over a couple of miles per hour will make it difficult to fly. Here are a few additional features:
- 2.4GHz radio control
- Gyro stabilization
- 4-ducted fans
- 4-channel control
- Incredibly crash-resistant materials
- Superior durability
The construction is well done. It can take a beating because it is made of Styrofoam, so it absorbs a lot. The blades are protected by the Styrofoam body and are sunk down, so they will not be hit in a fall.
It is recommended for children 12 years and above, so I guess this will be my toy for a while. 🙂 Find Air Hogs toys at Walmart, Target, amazon.com, and other retail stores nationwide.
