The American Century Championship is a premiere celebrity golf tournament that features some of the greatest celebrities in sports and entertainment. This year alone sports greats such as Aaron Rodgers, Charles Barkley, Jerry Rice, and John Elway are scheduled to tee off for a purpose. What is that purpose you ask, raising money to help battle cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, “In 2014, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in the US. Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths.” Recently my family suffered a loss due to cancer. On July 3rd, 2014 I lost my brother in law, Paul Henderson, to cancer.
Although the topic is a serious one, the celebrities who come out and support the event bring a lot of love and laughter, as seen in this greatest moments video of Ray Romano in action during last year’s championship:
Through Tournaments like the American Century Championship money is raised to help fund cancer research, so one day a cure can be found. There are over 200 types of cancers, so money is raised to help cancer patients and provide financial support to research companies to find a cure.
If you would like to support the 2014 celebrity golf tournament you can watch it on NBC this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 18-20). The tournament’s main sponsor is American Century Investments, which was founded by Jim Stower, a cancer survivor himself. Jim and his wife Virginia dedicated their lives to help battle the disease and created the Stowers Institute for Medical Research.
