Although we do not have vision issues in our immediate families, we noticed something odd about our littlest guy and his eyes. Recently we witnessed one of L’s eyes going a bit cross-eyed. The right eye would be looking straight, while his left eye would turn inward. This typically happened while he was looking at something close-up like eating his food, or brushing his teeth while looking in the mirror. As I mentioned above, we don’t have a history of vision problems so both Nate and I were clueless as to what was going on. After some online research I came across words like strabismus and esotropia, which defined L’s condition to a “T”. I made an appointment with a pediatric eye doc and after a very thorough exam he was diagnosed with estropia. If left untreated eventually his left eye would go “lazy”. Basically he has one weak eye and the stronger eye has taken over. With the help of his new-found glasses they will strengthen the muscle in his weaker eye, and hopefully years from now he will no longer need glasses at all. Although my first reaction was to cry and ask “why”, I’ve come around to the idea and I’m glad we found this problem sooner than later.
So here is our lil man with his Disney glasses he selected. Doesn’t he look handsome?
