Last month my son and I took a trip to South Beach, Miami for an enjoyable weekend on the water. Our beachfront hotel offered amazing views of the ocean and a pretty sweet pool as well. In addition to being there for work, I also scheduled some time with our cousins who live locally. J had no idea and when they showed up at our door he was giddy with excitement. J and his young cousins couldn’t wait to dive into the hotel pool and play.
When I look back at my life and think about all of the memories I have that were truly great, going fishing with my dad on charter boats are some of my favorite, and how I learned all about boating. The first time we went charter boat fishing was in Sitka, Alaska. I was 21 and we chartered a boat from a friend of a friend. I had never been to Alaska, but we slept on his friend’s boat in the marina and the subtle waves rocked you to sleep at night. In the mornings we would ride out into the Sitka Sound on our way to the Pacific Ocean, while Eagles flew above and bears walked the coastline. We caught a boatload of salmon and halibut and it really allowed my father and me to create a stronger bond.
Recently, we chartered a 41 foot Jersey Sportfisherman out of New Smyrna Beach. This trip was amazing! We had never been deep sea fishing in Florida, and since I moved to Florida in 2003 it was about time. We had a great time fighting amberjack and mahi mahi. I caught 2 shark, 3 triggerfish, 3 amberjack, a bunch of red-eye snapper, 3 sea bass, and barracuda. The weather was perfect and we came home with a bunch of delicious fresh fish.
