September is newborn screening awareness month across the United States. Nearly every newborn is screened for some conditions, and as a result of newborn screening, each year about 5,000 babies are identified as having a health condition.
The mission of the Save Babies Through Screening Foundation is to improve the lives of children and their families, by working to prevent disabilities and death resulting from disorders detectable through newborn screening tests. The Foundation’s goal is to see that every baby born in the United States is screened successfully, effectively, and comprehensively.
This is my Happy Story:
From an early age I knew I wanted to be a Mom. I began babysitting neighborhood kids from age 11 and became inseparable to a family with three little girls. They were my second family and I looked to the girls as my own. As time went on I graduated high school and moved out on my own. I attended community college and life moved on. However I never forgot the impression those little girls made on my heart.
Fast forward several years and I meet my prince charming and we got married. He is a teacher who comes from a large family and we both knew we wanted children. He was ready to start a family fairly quickly and I suggested we do a bit of traveling before settling down. Our first year Anniversary approached and he surprised me with a trip to Paris….and Rome….and Venice! Umm when I said I wanted to travel, I didn’t mean all at once. LOL! Nevertheless, we had an amazing trip!

Soon after baby boy #1 arrived and changed our world! Becoming a Mother for the first time is a undescribable feeling. I never knew my heart could grow so big! He truly made our lives complete. Close to three years later baby boy #2 came into our world. It was a bit of a transition because I had Mommy guilt for loving another child so much and didn’t want to sacrifice any of my time or love with our first-born.
Thankfully I have the most precious two sons any Mother could ask for. They make my life easy (for the most part) because they are the best of friends. I’m so grateful to have two healthy boys and I couldn’t pray for anything more. They are my world.
