How much do you budget for holiday spending? Do you ever find yourself struggling to stay within the budget because of deals that are too good to pass up? Here are a few ideas of how to maintain a holiday budget:
- Use cash. There’s nothing like the “old-fashioned” way of cash-in-hand that keeps you on budget. If you can only afford x amount of dollars, then only bring that amount and you are sure to stay within your guidelines. Keep the cards at home so you’re not tempted!
- Use prepaid cards. Not comfortable carrying around a few hundred dollars in cold hard cash? By using prepaid cards, you again only use the amount allotted within your budget, however it’s in the form of a card like a MasterCard or Visa. There’s no overture spending. This is a great idea for teens too! It’s important to teach our children when they’re young how to budget and this is a great way of helping them keep track of their spending.
- Enter giveaways. With the ever-growing popularity of blogging, more companies are turning to bloggers and social media fanatics to promote their latest products, especially at holiday season. There are giveaways geared towards every family member so why not enter a few and roll the dice on a completely free gift to give this year! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve saved our one income budget by gifting giveaway prizes to friends and family.
If you have found yourself over budget in years past, I highly recommend trying out one or all of these options this shopping season. Leave the credit cards at home! There’s no point in getting up at midnight, fighting crowds, and wasting hours in line only to pay interest on those items for the next several years. The door buster items end up costing you a lot more than you anticipated, making Black Friday shopping pointless.
