My family loves to travel, whether on a plane, train, or in a car we love to see the sites that this amazingly diverse world offers. At the age of two our oldest was able to go to Barcelona, Naples, Rome, Florence, and the French Riviera. Now that he is older he has begun to talk, and his little brother has picked up on that trait as well. So picture yourself in a car and there is a constant whining in the back with the proverbial, “Are we there yet?…When are we going to get there?… This is taking fooorever!”
Well, if you are anything thing like me this can make you go a little crazy. I love traveling, but I do not especially enjoy the getting to the destination part. Like my children, I find myself asking the same questions, but I would not never let them know that. 🙂 But the question is raised, what can I do to entertain my family while traveling? I have come up with some surefire ways to make your travel experiences much more bearable.
Tips for Traveling with Kids
- Portable Gaming Devices
There are many portable gaming systems out there that will keep your little nuggets quiet and entertained during a road trip. These include iPad with the thousands of apps that can be uploaded in an instant, Nintendo DS with hundreds of ds games, and Play Station Vita to name a few.
- Car Games
My personal favorite car game is the ABC Game. In this game you have to find words on billboards, cars, or anywhere else outside of the car that start with all of the letters of the alphabet. You start with A and work your way to Z. At times you can change the rules for hard letters like Q or X. Another favorite is I Spy where you challenge your family members to find an object using a color clue.
- Card Games
My family loves card games from Euchre to Go Fish, if there is a card game that we can play it’s on. With young children it is good to play games like Go Fish, Slap Jack, Uno, Concentration, and War.
- Portable DVD Player
If you are blessed to have a fully loaded minivan, then you probably are aware of the value of a vehicle with a DVD player in it. The children wear head phones and all is silent as they watch their favorite movies. If you do not have a DVD player in your car then you can buy a portable DVD player which has the same effect.
These are just a few tips to use when traveling. I am sure you have your own tricks that you have picked up along the way. Please comment below with your greatest traveling tips.
