Children learn by example. Healthy eating habits start at home and that’s why I provide healthy meals for my family. If a child grows up never incorporating healthy foods into their diet they are more inclined to become overweight and struggle with health issues. By forming this habit early, children will be more likely to choose a healthier lifestyle than those who don’t know any better.
Most of the time I take the boys with me to the grocery store. At this young age, everything is fun and there’s always a lesson to be learned. On our recent trip to Wal-Mart I picked up Jennie-O turkey sausage.
Jennie-O’s simple service project Champions for Kids encourages parents to make healthy meals for their children. Here’s what Jennie-O mentions about the project:
Children who do not eat a nutritious breakfast have a harder time focusing and staying awake in class, which can seriously affect their future educational and professional success. Starting their day with low-fat healthy protein like Jennie-O Turkey Bacon and Sausage is a great way to help kids grow and succeed inside and outside the classroom!
Cook a nutritious breakfast for children in your community (your child’s class, youth group, or sports team, for example), and let us know that you gave breakfast a wake-up call! Every time you cook a nutritious breakfast for children in your community, let us know at championsforkids.org/share so that we can celebrate your participation and count you towards our goal of mobilizing 20 million people by 2020 to become Champions for Kids!
The site offers great recipe ideas and inspirational stories too. Choosing a healthier breakfast option like turkey bacon or turkey sausage gives kids a running start to their day. Here’s my lil guys enjoying their healthy breakfast: eggs, Jennie-O turkey sausage, and strawberries.
Giving back to our local community is something I also enjoy doing so I purchased a few extra packages of Jennie-O turkey sausage to donate to my husband’s school food pantry. By doing this, I hope to help families in need eat healthier too!
I want to encourage all of my readers to visit Jennie-O’s site and learn more about their simple service project.

Great post very informative! One good question is how do you get the very picky little ones to eat healthy? My little ones are so picky no matter how hard I try they won’t eat the veggies, etc….
Jennifer H says
Good question Christina! Possibly mixing healthy foods into something they love to eat would help?

I wish you could borrow my eight year old grandson. I have never seen a child as picky in my life. When mine where growing up, I didn’t have that problem.
Jennifer H says
Awww! I was actually a picky child, which just floors me that both of mine are not. I think it’s because we started them young eating right and so they’ve never known the difference. Neither of my boys have even tried soda yet! I’m holding off as long as I can. 🙂

I tries giving them the healthy food but they wouldn’t eat it or would throw it. LOL. I can say we have managed to get them to eat fruit and pretty much drink water all day and have at least one glass of milk a day. They do take daily vitamins but actually eating veggies is my biggest battle. Ohh well I will just keep trying 🙂
Jennifer H says
A daily vitamin is a great option! You’re doing great Mama!

Eating healthy is very important in this time frame of life. And as adults we need to be an example for our children as well. Without healthy eating we tend to get health problems that can sometimes be controlled with medicine, but why not try to do the healthy thing as a start. Thank you for sharing.

We are always trying to figure out new ways to get our kids to eat good proteins in the morning – one of the best ways to start the day.

My boys love these kinds of sausage and would be a yummy addition to our breakfasts. We don’t typically have meat with our morning meal so I think they would enjoy this! Love giving back to the community!
