I have always had an interest in our family heritage for as long as I can remember. I enjoyed sitting down with my grandmother and listening to stories about her life and learning about past family members that I never had the opportunity to meet. I treasured those moments I spent talking to my grandma, even more so now that she is no longer with us.
Now that I have an Ancestry.com membership I’ve been able to research documents and find Passenger Lists from my family’s arrival to the United States. As I work on my Family Tree, I remember those stories she shared with me and somehow feel close to her again. I am so proud to see my family’s accomplishments from the boats of Sicily until now.
Creating an Ancestry.com membership is fairly simple. You fill out some identifying information about yourself and start working your way back on your tree. Each time there’s a new hint on your tree a shaky leaf appears and offers you possible leads. These hints include all kinds of documentation including military records, birth records, death certificates, and more.
If you’re lucky like I was, you already have a family member on Ancestry.com who’s started the legwork for you. As you enter information into your family tree hints will appear with a corresponding tree where you can pull facts to your own tree, making it user-friendly and helpful to continue your journey.
After signing up with Ancestry.com a month ago my family tree is already back 7 generations (8 if you include me) on my Dad’s Dad’s side. We’re in the 1700’s! My Mom’s side is almost as far back, thanks to some family members working on trees previously. I have learned so much already and can’t wait to continue my family history. You can literally lose track of time while researching on the site because there is so much information and once you get going, you won’t want to stop! 🙂
I highly recommend signing up for an Ancestry.com membership. It is so worth the value of learning about your family history and where you came from. They even offer a 14-day free trial to the site. Just think of how much you can learn in a few short weeks!
So who’s ready to start their journey? Thanks to the generous people at Ancestry.com I’m giving away not one, but two 6-month memberships!! The winner will get both 6-month memberships so they can share one with a family member or friend. Ancestry.com knows that when families work together, they’re more successful in their research.
