My boys are at the perfect age to help out in the kitchen. A family staple dish we enjoy creating is spaghetti and meatballs. It’s one of those dishes that typically gets gobbled up in one sitting, and is quite easy to make on limited time.
Technology is turned off (with the exception of Pandora) then the boys and I jam out while creating a meal together. It’s moments like these that I really cherish. Plus, a great opportunity to teach them important skills they’ll need later in life.
On this particular evening I noticed a little magic in the kitchen. I saw an opportunity to share with them an old tale I learned growing up. Have you heard of this one? You know when your pasta is cooked when it sticks to the wall. We make a lot of Italian dishes, but somehow I hadn’t shared that with them in the past. So I took a cooked noodle from the pot and told the boys to come watch. When it stuck to the wall they started cracking up. They each took turns tossing a spaghetti noodle to see if it would stick.
Then my little guy formed his noodle into a mustache and said “Mom, look at me!” It was too cute!
During dinner, we make an effort to talk about something positive that happened during our day. We ask each other, “what are you thankful for today?” Many times the boys are the first to remind us of our daily ritual. It reassures me that we’re doing something right. 🙂
